Cricut Explore FAQ’s

I wanted to take the time to answer questions about the Cricut Explore. I’ve seen a lot of online confusion that I hope to put to rest. (See previous posts I’ve made about the new machine: here and here.)

Is the new Design Space software backwards compatible with older Cricut machines?

At launch, no. It was designed specifically for the Cricut Explore. There were hints on the Cricut Facebook page, however, that they are looking into making it work for older Cricut machines. I would take that not as a promise, however, but simply at what they said, that they are looking into it.

Will my older cartridges work with this new machine?

Yes! There is a slot for normal cartridges to be plugged into the machine. You will still have to design on Design Space, as this is not a standalone machine.

I’ve already linked my cartridges to a Gypsy or Cricut Craft Room. Will I be able to use them with Design Space?

All cartridges linked to Cricut Craft Room will automatically be put in your Design Space (provided you use the same Cricut account.) I highly suggest, if you haven’t already, syncing your Gypsy ASAP to Cricut Craft Room to ensure that your Gypsy specific “freebie” cartridges properly are transferred into your account.

Will I be able to use digital cartridges I purchased in Design Space?

Yes, again, as long as you use the same Cricut account. Any physical or digital cartridge will be accessible in both Cricut Craft Room and Design Space.

What kind of formats of files can I cut with the Cricut Explore?

The “Cut What You Want” feature supports image files such as .jpg, .gif, .png, .bmp, .svg, and .dxf files. It will also allow you to use fonts installed on your computer!

Is there a fee for “Cut What You Want”?

No. While Cricut originally intended to allow this as part of the subscription service, they changed their mind due to overwhelming customer feedback! “Cut What You Want” is now going to be free.

What is the subscription, and what does it include?

Cricut will be offering a subscription service that allows you a rental service as long as you subscribe. This grants you access to all non licensed cartridges. (Examples of Cartridges not included in the subscription would be Disney, Hello Kitty, etc.) You can choose to subscribe on a monthly basis for $9.99 a month or a discounted $99.99 for a full year.

Do I have to have the subscription to cut with Design Space?

No. Using cartridges you already own, or using the “Cut What You Want” feature , will remain free. Even if you start out using a subscription, you can cancel at any time.

Does the introduction of Design Space mean that Cricut Craft Room is going away?

No. Because of the fact that Design Space is not compatible with older machines, Cricut Craft Room will still be available.

Can I use my Gypsy with the Cricut Explore?

No. However, any cartridges you have on the Gypsy can be synced to your Cricut.com account so you can use them in Design Space.

On what devices can I use Design Space?

It can be used, at launch, on PC and Mac computers. It will also be released later for iPad tablets. (No word yet on whether it will be available for Android tablets at this time.)

Do I need to be connected to the internet to use Design Space?

Yes, an internet connection is required, just like with Cricut Craft Room. If you do not have access to the internet where your Cricut Explore is going to be located, you might want to consider a Cricut Expression 2 instead, which is a standalone device.

I already have an older Cricut machine. Why do I have to shell out more money for a new one?

You don’t. Older machines are still going to be supported and Cricut Craft Room will still be available for them. Cricut keeps repeating over and over that they will continue to support older machines. It is up to everyone to decide for themselves whether they are able to justify buying a new machine. But think about this: how many of us have to run out and get the new cell phone that comes out to keep up with technology? Do we complain that our 5 year old phone can’t do everything that the latest phone can? No. Because technology only improves as time goes on. You should consider it the same here. I, for one, am happy about that the company is moving forward and finding ways to improve their machines.

If you have any other questions about the machine, you can post them in the comments or send me a message through the form in the menu. I will try to keep this page updated with more questions in the future!
